Intent of Wiki

The intent of this Wiki site is to inform people about the basics of Ayurveda and provide places in the Vancouver BC area where treatments are provided and more information can be found. This site is a result of my own search for information and I thought it would be helpful to share it with others of like-mind.

Lizabeth Harrison - Licenced Esthetician and Spa Therapist.

I have been involved in the Spa Industry since the 1970's, first starting as a make-up and skin care advisor with Merle Norman Cosmetics. I enjoyed working in this industry so much that I took a course at Blanche Macdonald Institute to be trained as a Licenced Esthetician in 1983 where I learned how to give treatments in facials, manicures, pedicures, make-up, waxings and tintings. A whol new world was opened up for me to play and experiment with different skin care lines, interact with clients on a more personal level and work to perfect my techniques in giving treatments.

In 2008 I continued with training at West Coast College of Massage Therapy as a Spa Practitioner which deepened my understanding of anatomy and physiology encompassing the whole body and added a few more modalities to my skill set. This time the program included body massage, hydrotherapy, body wraps and scrubs, reflexology, Thai massage, Shiatsu, Indian head massage and Ayurveda. This training opened up so much more for me to work with, now I could move from the extremities of head, hands and feet to working with the whole body and put it all together with a variety of treatments.My experience includes working at urban day spas, hotels and remote spas.

It is called 'the science of life' and looks at the person in a 'holistic' and 'wholistic' manner, taking into account physiology, eating habits, exercise, career choices and spa modalities that encourage balancing the body, mind and spirit.

It is a philosophy that dates back over 5000 years in India and has been kept alive through the ancient Sanscrit writing of the Vedas or prinicples. It is popular in India and is gaining more notice in the Western world as we grow towards a global community and embrace other ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is the sister science of Yoga taking the physical poses and meditation to a different level with other healing modalities.
